The world needs science and science needs women. In order to achieve full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls, and further achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls, in 2015 the UN General Assembly adopted resolution declaring 11 February as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
More than 20 years after the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action from the 4th World Conference on Women, women remain underrepresented in the natural sciences. According to the most recent UNESCO Science Report, women account for only 28 percent of researchers across the world, with the gap deepening at the higher echelons of decision-making.
In this regard, UNESCO Almaty Office is organizing an event dedicated to the International Day of Women and Girls in Science and celebrated on the occasion of the International Women's Day, which will take place on 15 March 2017 in Almaty, Kazakhstan, at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. The agenda of the event is aimed to raise awareness about the existing programmes, initiatives and projects supporting women in science and providing opportunities to encourage women in promotion of their scientific research, as well as to popularize science among youth. The event will provide an overview of global data on women scientists and their fields of research in different regions and countries, including Central Asia.
Researchers in the field of natural sciences, representatives of international organizations, NGOs, youth and students will take part in this event. A panel discussion with women scientists from various fields, including hydrology, glaciology, chemistry, biology, will be organized during the event. The participants, especially students and young people, will have an opportunity to ask questions about making career in science and relevant opportunities.
