Seeing chocolates cluttered shelves in the stores, it is difficult to believe, but the shortage of cocoa - a serious problem that worried both producers and leading market analysts. The fact that chocolate could soon become a delicacy, available only to the wealthiest, according to industry reports, and a record rise in price of cocoa beans - up to $ 5,000 per ton - Saxo Bank has warned in his "shock predictions" for 2015.

Possible chocolate starvation, says the magazine New Yorker, is to prevent the International Cocoa Quarantine Centre (International Cocoa Quarantine Centre), located in the south of the UK Arborfilde.

That is the problem and should be solved quarantine center, where scientists from the University of Reading, contain about four hundred varieties of cocoa. With the decline in crop yield for farmers would be bringing healthy plants from other countries, or the conclusion of new varieties of cocoa beans.

But the young chocolate tree is a serious disease can occur without symptoms for several months; if you bring a plant, for example, from Ecuador in Côte d'Ivoire, in the end it turns out that the disease spread to healthy trees, and the harvest will be lost. According to Professor Paul Hadley gardening, transportation of infected plants from continent to continent would mean "the end of the chocolate."

Quarantine Arborfilde - an obligatory stop, which makes 95% of cocoa pods and shoots, transported from one place to another. Maintaining the correct climate in the greenhouse requires enormous energy costs, but that the United Kingdom is considered to be almost perfect quarantine area: are poorly survive pests of the tropics and not have their own plantations of cocoa, which they could threaten.

By a similar scheme runs the export and import of many tropical plants: shrubs driven through Portugal coffee, bananas through Belgium, rubber trees - in the US state of Maryland. Transshipment center for cocoa operates in the UK for thirty years, but last year instead of the old greenhouses built a new complex, which cost one million pounds ($ 1.5 million). Cocoa plants brought here in the form of cuttings.

Upon arrival in I.C.Q.C. sapling grafted to seedlings, and the result is a genetic clone of the "parent". Each plant in the pot was placed in its own chamber, protected from insects, in which it holds two months. After another nine months sapling gives own kidneys, which are grafted by the new seedlings to get a clone of the second generation, which is an indicator - his weekly check for signs of disease.

Only if after two years of disease and pests are not shown, the mother plant cuttings are sent to the destination; intermediate clones thus destroyed. Thus, the quarantine lasts three years.

The world's largest chocolate makers agree that planting trees is a healthy three-year quarantine pause: ICQC It receives funding from Cadbury, Mars and other market participants. According to the forecast of chocolate giant Mars and Barry Callebaut, if now we do nothing, by 2020 global demand for cocoa will exceed supply by 1 million tons (in 2013 the difference amounted to 700 thousand tons), and another 10 years to reach 2 million tonnes
