HTC has talked a lot about getting all kinds of people and companies to use its Vive virtual reality headset, and it’s taking some steps toward that today. At CES, it announced something called the Vive Tracker — a small attachment that adds motion tracking to any third-party accessory.

I think I understand the thought process behind dieting and nutrition company Atkins’ “Sugar Goggles” game at CES, and it’s something like: “if we combine personal health, gaming, and virtual reality, some tech journalist is bound to cover it.” And here I am! But dear god, how did it turn out so awkwardly? The following exchange is all I can think of.

The Asus phone leaked earlier this week is now an official product: the ZenFone AR, which puts virtual and augmented reality center stage. The ZenFone AR is the first phone to support both Tango — Google’s mobile augmented reality platform — and Google’s Android-based Daydream VR platform.

Google is taking over Twitter’s mobile app developer platform Fabric, as well as its Crashlytics crash reporting system, Answers mobile app analytics, Digits SMS login system and FastLane development automation system. Twitter launched Fabric as a modular SDK in 2014 to allow developers to pick and choose different tools to improve their apps, and it now serves apps reaching 2.5 billion users built by 580,000 developers. But as Twitter tries to get into better financial shape, it’s cutting non-essential divisions. By passing the platform off to Google, it can remove the costs of running Fabric without screwing over its developers by suddenly shutting it down. Google will continue to operate Fabric and its related tools, and developers shouldn’t have to do anything to support the transition. It begs the question, is Twitter trying to slim down to take another swing at getting acquired?

Microsoft has been making notable improvements to the experiences on its Twitch competitor, Beam, since it purchased the startup this past August. A major update was just launched globally for the service which highlights a new faster video player, Xbox Live sign-ins, and a redesigned home page that makes the service’s various communities more visible to users. These features had previously only been available to Beam Pro users as a beta. The update to the service was announced on Twitter by Beam founder Matt Salsamendi.

A small glimmer of sunshine for what has been an extremely rocky year or so for Samsung. A court in Seoul’s Central District has rejected an arrested warrant for Samsung vice-chairman/heir-apparent Jay Y. Lee that was issued by prosecutors earlier this week. The warrant was a result of bribery and embezzlement charges that also landed South Korea’s recently impeached president Park Geun-hye in serious political hot water. According to Reuters, the decision not to arrest Lee came after 22 hours of questioning and an overnight stay for the executive as the court reached its verdict.

Tesla completed its $2.6 billion acquisition of SolarCity this week, and, to celebrate, the company has announced a major solar energy project: wiring up the whole island of Ta’u in American Samoa. Previously, the island ran on diesel generators, but over the past year Tesla has installed a microgrid of solar energy panels and batteries that will supply "nearly 100 percent" of power needs for Ta’u’s 600 residents. The project seems intended to show off the potential benefits of the SolarCity acquisition, with Ta’u’s microgrid comprised of 5,328 solar panels from SolarCity and Tesla, along with 60 Tesla Powerpacks batteries for storage. But buying SolarCity remains a risky move for Tesla, with the purchase including billions of dollars of debt for a company that's far from profitable (SolarCity spends $6 for every $1 it makes in sales). Nevertheless, Tesla CEO Elon Musk describes the acquisition as "blindingly obvious" — a necessary step in his so-called "Master Plan" to integrate clean energy generation and storage.

Outside Tulsa, Oklahoma, among a series of nondescript warehouses off Route 69, lies a Google campus. Beyond its peculiar location — about 2,000 miles from the company's Mountain View, California headquarters — the site has all the standard hallmarks. There are polka-dotted employee badges, free breakfast and lunch buffets, and the company’s bright logo colors splashed over prominent slabs of wall space. It is, however, unlike most other satellite offices owned by the search giant.

Qualcomm sold its Snapdragon 835 mobile processor as a virtual and augmented reality powerhouse earlier this week, but it’s been light on examples — at least, until now. As part of a partnership with Lionsgate, it’s showing off a VR tie-in to the upcoming Power Rangers movie, complete with a multi-colored set of Power Rangers-themed mobile headsets. In principle, these reference designs are like the Gear VR, Daydream View, or other smartphone-powered products. But they feature something that’s practically brand-new for mobile headsets: inside-out tracking, thanks to depth-sensing cameras on the front of the Qualcomm phone prototype inside. This means that you can walk around — not just look around — inside the virtual world of Zordon’s cave, for the roughly five minutes the experience lasts.

Q. In my Twitter feed, I’ve been seeing posts recently where the person has included a grid of four photos with the post. How do you do that? A. Twitter allows up to four photos to be included with a tweet, so you just have to add the images when you are composing your post. This photo-collage feature was introduced in 2014; some users use sequential images to create miniature narratives, while others just post multiple pet photos.

I sometimes look at apps on the Google Play website with my computer. When I am on an app description page, it sometimes says the app is not compatible with my device, and sometimes the page incorrectly says I don’t have any devices. Where does it get this information?

One of the biggest crazes consuming Silicon Valley entrepreneurs and venture capitalists late in the last decade was “clean technology,” the kinds of technologies that would cut down on pollutants and dirty fuels. Billions of dollars were piled into clean technology ideas as numerous start-ups sprouted to advance and commercialize the field. But many of these companies later faded or outright crashed because the new technologies were not practical, did not make money or both.

This afternoon, the United Launch Alliance is set to launch its final rocket of 2016 — an Atlas V tasked with sending a communications satellite into orbit. If successful, it will wrap up 12 launches for ULA this year, and 115 for the company since it was formed nearly a decade ago.

Skype’s mobile apps are terrible, and the only reason you’d want to use one as your main communications platform would be if the company rebuilt the software from the ground up. Well, luckily enough, that seems to be what it’s doing with Skype Mingo — an experimental Skype app for Android that’s currently in alpha testing. Mingo is your “ultimate communications hub,” says Skype. Not only does it have Skype’s usual mobile data-powered video and voice-calling functionality, but it also handles native phone calls, your phone’s contacts, and SMS. The app also seems like it’s aimed at developing markets where data is at a premium. The release notes state that that the app is not only “small and fast,” but comes with features like Economic Calling and On-Demand Sync to help users save money.

Lenovo said today that it was updating its line of ThinkPad laptops in 2017 to include newer processors, more authentication features, and improved trackpads — something that has been a point of weakness with previous iterations of ThinkPad laptops.
